REWILDING

Japanese botanist, Akira Miyawaki, specialized in seeds and natural forests; In his lifetime, starting in the 1970s, he was involved in the planting of over 1,700 forests in Japan and throughout the world. Today, Mini-forests are being planted throughout cities, schools and degraded landscapes in an effort to revitalize and increase biodiversity.  

1 Identify native climax species

2 Decompact soil & add organic material (goal is to create a loose native soil prior to planting)

3 Plant 3-4 plants per square meter

4 Requires up-front maintenance (approx 3 years), until it becomes a self sustaining forest: water, mulch, weeding
