We believe that what distinguishes architecture from the other arts is the dialogue between client and designer. Each of our projects is a response to a singular location, a particular climate, and the intentions of a unique client. Every project is crafted to harmonize with the history, ecology, landscape, and architectural context of its particular location.
Based in Virginia, we work with clients across the U.S. as well as overseas, from California to New York to London to Kenya. Our practice includes new construction, historic renovation, additions, and remodels.
From the earliest stages of its design, the East Aurora House has maintained a symbiotic relationship with its natural setting. Large expanses of glass draw the eye outward as the house is organized around a series of garden rooms, each oriented deliberately to the land beyond. Even the water-source heating and cooling system takes advantage of the adjacent pond.
It is only fitting that, now having reached the end of its useful life for the family who planned it, inhabited it, and loved it, the house should continue that special relationship. In a unique vision, the owners have chosen to deconstruct portions of the home, recycle and reuse its materials, and allow nature to return. The remaining structure will become a hybrid landscape - remembering what once was while opening the structure to new forms and futures.
Our goal is to guide this tradition with care, striving to leave the resulting spaces with the same quiet simplicity with which they were first conceived. The new, modern ruin will stand as an invitation for renewal and reflection. This act is a celebration of impermanence rather than replacement - of continuation rather than consumption. It’s a rare opportunity to contribute to this moment, and to once again reinterpret the boundary between house and landscape.
